A whimsical cast brass reclining frog sculpture by Sarreid Ltd., produced in Spain circa 1960. This finely modeled figure captures the relaxed pose of a frog lying back with one leg casually crossed over the other, hands tucked beneath its chin. Both playful and sculptural, the work embodies mid-century design’s fascination with humor, luxury, and the stylized natural world.
Techniques:
The piece was sand-cast in solid brass, a process leaving a smooth, weighty form with subtle tool marks that reveal the artisan’s hand. The body is highly polished to a golden sheen, while the back and limbs are detailed with stippling and dotted texturing to suggest the spotted skin of a frog, creating a lively contrast between polished planes and tactile surfaces. The vent aperture on the underside is typical of Sarreid’s Spanish foundry production. Each example would have been hand-finished, giving slight individuality to every casting.
