About the Item
A very unusual Palm Beach Regency style trinket or bathroom dish in the form of a swan with double clam shell wings, in the style of Gabriella Binazzi and made in Italy c. 1970.
This is a wonderful example of eccentric coastal Italian zoomorphic mid-century design. The body and neck of the swan are made in cast metal, originally gilded and now with a beautiful aged patina. On either side this is flanked by two large and flamboyant clam shells that together make the piece appear as a swan with its wings unfurled.
This double clam shell arrangement is very unusual and gives the piece an expansive presence – most similar examples consist of only one clam shell. It also means the piece has copious capacity. It is very versatile, perhaps for holding soap, bath salts or sponges, for holding rings, jewelry, trinkets and other items, or also as a decorative item with great presence.
The shells are both in very good condition with no chips.
