About the Item
A modernistic red clay figurine by Finnish sculptor Viljo Mäkinen for Kupittaan Savi Oy, one of Finland’s most notable pottery and ceramic manufacturers of the mid-twentieth century. The piece carries Mäkinen’s characteristic touch of gentle humor, distilled into a simplified yet expressive form. Its natural, rough-textured surface enhances the warmth of the clay and adds to the figurine’s quiet charm. Viljo Mäkinen (1920-1985) was a Finnish sculptor active in the mid-20th century, best known for his modernist approach to ceramic art. His works often portrayed huans, animals and figures with a witty, stylized edge, distilling form into essential lines while retaining a sense of liveliness. Through his collaboration with Kupittaan Savi, Mäkinen helped shape the company’s reputation for producing artistic yet accessible and modernistic designs that continue to be sought after by collectors today.
