About the Item

The shiny Heron couple Two brass herons by Michel Jarry (1938-1996). Circa 1965. Dim: 55 x 25 x 17 cm each. The artist from Nice had the particularity of sculpting his works himself, unlike his colleagues who subcontracted them to foundry craftsmen. In the Sixties, Michel Jarry gave up his training as an electrician and a promising job offer at the Prince's Palace in Monaco to dedicate himself to sculpture. Prince Rainier, attracted by this new talent, became his first client. Now dedicated to his passion, Michel Jarry will devote his time, his ardor and his energy to the creation of a magnificent bestiary: roosters, eagles, herons and owls will take birth under his fingers. French President Georges Pompidou will also commission a sculpture from him. Our shiny heron couple is not only decorative. It will also bring a touch of the chic 60'ies from French Riviera to any interiors. In Europe, animal sculpture has long been considered minor. It experienced a turning point at the Paris Salon of 1831 where a sculpture by Antoine-Louis Barye entitled the Tiger Devouring a Gharial aroused public admiration. Barye is one of the first sculptors to abandon the mythological representation of the animal in favor of a naturalistic representation. It was during this period, at the end of the 19th century, that the revival of animal sculpture developed. Animal sculptures were particularly popular during the Second Empire. It is also possible to speak of a French animal school which would bring together Antoine-Louis Barye and Alfred Barye the son, Émile-Coriolan Guillemin, Pierre Louis Rouillard, Auguste Caïn, Pierre Jules Mêne and François Pompon more recently. Michel Jarry is the worthy heir of his famous predecessors.
