About the Item

Pair of glass sculptures Cats Archimede Seguso (attr.) Seguso Vetri d’arte Murano, circa 1960-1970 Dimensions: achrome cat: height 9.45 in x 4.49 in x 5.24 (24 cm x 11.4 x 13.3); weight: 4 lb (2.05 kg) black cat: height 9.65 in x 5.53 x 4.72 (24.5 cm x 11.5 x 12); weight: 4 lb (2.16 kg) State of conservation: intacts. The grindstone-worked solid glass sculptures depicting two cats are the work of Archimede Seguso's manufacture and come from around 1960 to 1970. The cats are depicted sitting with their front paws wrapped around their long tails. Their elongated eyes are made with deep, oblique incisions, while their ears are held high. The ears are more pointed in the achrome cat while being more rounded in the black one. Their slender bodies are in the pose of elegant cats resting, yet alert, with ears ready to pick up any noise. The muscles of the limbs have been kept soft, with the paws covered by broad, pointed tails, except for a tiny glimpse of them underneath. The forms of the animals are stylized and shaped with the confidence of those accustomed to working with glass. This model, designed and often made by Archimedes Seguso himself, appears in a figure included in Gino Seguso's text about memories of the glassworks (Gino Seguso, Presentazione, Semplici Pennellate, in Quaderni della Vetreria n. 18). Archimedes Seguso's cats, with their long, puffy tails gathered around their paws, exemplify his undisputed ability not only to depict the physical forms of animals, but also to capture their natures. Produced using different techniques and colors, here they appear in their simplest forms. Indeed, the use of pure glass or crystal glass slurries enhances the purity and design of the pattern. Archimede Seguso was born on December 17, 1909, in Murano. He descended from the Seguso family, a line of glassmakers whose glass work has been constantly documented since the 1300s. Archimede Seguso emerged at his father's furnace while young due to his artistic spirit and entrepreneurial abilities, imprinting his art with technical innovations and original models. He distinguished himself at the Biennale di Venezia, the Triennale of Milano fairs, as well as important international exhibitions, by presenting consistently new objects, characterized by a balanced formal and compositional aesthetic. After the Second World War, in 1946, the master glassmaker founded his glassworks where he produced highly original works: "He completely renewed the artistic horizon of the island with his solid glass sculptures featuring figures of women, animals, and vases, all modeled and carved hot from a single mass of glass (as “Donna con cerbiatto” in 1932, “Primo Carnera” in 1934, “Donna che si spoglia” in 1934)” (Vetreria Artistica Seguso, quaderno 12). The techniques used are varied and original, such as the unprecedented and extraordinary creations of the 1950s, including his merletti, the vases piume, the corallo, the festoni, a fasce, a macchie, avorio, a coste, i pennellati, a losanghe, i fantasia bianco e nera, a nastro richiamato, the serie etere…; "also special from those years are the solid sculptures like the bas-relief of the Dormiente (Sleeping Woman) from 1951, the colorful handles produced with Santomaso, and the animals iridized by complex glass fabrics." (Vetreria Artistica Seguso, quaderno 12). From the 1960s, instead, there are vases crafted using techniques, such as a fili continui, aleante, overlapping colors, gioco, filigrana stellata, optical art, and cipolla… Later the master would also be involved as a designer, for example in the creation of colored handles for Santomasi or in the creation of candlesticks for Tiffany and more. Italian 1940s Crystal Bowl, Milan, circa 1940
By Eliseo Mangili
Located in Milano, IT
Crystal bowl with silver and coral decorative elements Eliseo Mangili (1890-1977) Milan, circa 1940 It measures 4.8 in high x Ø 8.26 in; foot Ø 4.33 in (12.2 x Ø 21 cm; Ø foot 11 cm) 5.51 lb (2.55 kg) The rounded bowl narrows and rests on a flared foot with a polygonal section in blue crystal. The bowl itself is crafted in transparent crystal and continues the polygonal motif. The base of the bowl is decorated with a series of engraved blue arches which somewhat overlap creating a corolla and with five vertical cusps of the same colour. The rim is accented with a triple cut line around the entire circumference. A silver band representing a currant branch wraps the “waist” where the foot joins the bowl with currants made of orange coral. The bowl features the following marks along the silver band which defines its narrowing towards the foot. These help us date the work: 1) a lozenge with the abbreviation of the province (MI); Roman fasces; the number 08. This was the mark in force after the promulgation of the law of 5 February 1934 n. 305, which provided for the use of a uniform mark for the identification of the silversmith and of the province. In this case it is the Milanese smith Eliseo Mangili during the period 1935-1944. 2) 800 without a border. Title in thousandths of silver. Eliseo Mangili was one of the most talented goldsmiths flanking Alfredo Ravasco...
