About the Item

The superb pair of porcelain figures depicts two birds modeled in a naturalistic stance, each standing on a shaped base with foliage and grassy details. The bodies are carefully structured with wings folded against their sides, elongated tails extending backward, and slender legs resting firmly on the bases. The birds’ heads are turned slightly, creating variation between the two figures, and both display long, pointed orange beaks and black caps on their heads. Their plumage is painted in tones of white and gray, with detailed strokes delineating individual feathers across the wings, tail, and back. The bases are molded with raised tufts of greenery, painted in green, yellow, and blue enamels to provide grounding for the birds. These porcelain models were produced by the Meissen manufactory in Germany, identifiable by the underglaze blue crossed swords mark on the underside of each base. Additional impressed and incised numbers, including "2407," appear alongside the mark, indicating the mold number used in production. The double-crossed swords mark has been the signature of Meissen since the early 18th century, signifying its origin as one of Europe’s earliest and most prominent porcelain manufacturers. No signature of an individual modeler is present, though the style and modeling correspond to known naturalistic bird figures produced at Meissen. The Meissen manufactory was established in the early 1700s under royal patronage and became renowned for its pioneering development of true hard-paste porcelain in Europe. By the mid-18th century and into the 19th century, Meissen produced a wide range of bird models, often based on natural studies, with detailed painting that reflected close observation of avian species. Figures such as these were crafted from hard-paste porcelain, molded in sections, and assembled before firing, with subsequent hand-painting in enamel colors to bring out the details of plumage, beaks, and eyes. These bird figures form part of the wider Meissen tradition of natural history-inspired porcelain, executed with technical precision and a focus on accurate representation.
