Rare Bronze Sculpture by Pierre Manoli, Horse Head , France, 20th Century It is signed and marked at the bottom of the separable gilded bronze base: "Jumping Manoli E.A. 3 (meaning Artist's proof 3) 1998" Pierre Manoli, born December 15, 1927 in Cairo and died February 9, 2001 in La Richardais, is a French sculptor of Cretan origin. He created many monumental works as part of public cities, states and and government's commissions. Born in Cairo, in 1950, he moved to France, studied art in Paris, first at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs (Decorative Arts 1951-1957) and then at the École des Beaux-Arts. He works clay, plaster, stone (in 1964, he makes sculptures using a technique of which he is the inventor: the fusion of granite) but his preference goes to metal. The artist is experimenting extensively with the materials he uses. In 1961, he made his first projections of molten metal in water and the technique of iridescence on brass. In 1976, he decided to settle in La Richardais, a village near the Rance, and set up his studio. In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, in addition to his studio works, the artist made many monumental works. He created Heliosphere in 1990, a work that will enable him to win the Florence Gould Foundation Prize at the XXIVth International Contemporary Art Prize in Monte Carlo. In 1992, La Grande Voile sculpture was installed in the renovated hall of Montparnasse station in Paris. Then in 1995, it is the fountain of life, sculpture-fountain, which is inaugurated in Chantepie in Ille-et-Vilaine. He creates and sets up the liturgical furniture of the Saint-Corentin cathedral of Quimper in 1999. On February 9, 2001, the sculptor died at La Richardais. On September 8th of the same year, the Manoli Museum, a private museum and sculpture garden, is inaugurated in the artist's home. The work of Pierre Manoli has a specific theme: nature and especially elements such as water - the sea was his great source of inspiration - and fire. Among his monumental works, there are two sculptures in Paris for the railway station Montparnasse: Homage to Rail, 1970, and La Grande Voile, 1992, also, in one of the patios of the faculty of Jussieu: Signal-Tuyaux. An important set of his sculptures was presented in the Saint-Sauveur chapel in Saint-Malo from July 15th to September 2nd 2001.
