About the Item

Art Deco panther circa 1930. Spelter sculpture with black patina on a marble base, signed R. Rochard for Irénée Félix René Rochard. In perfect condition. Length: 65 cm Width: 14 cm Height: 22 cm Weight: 11 kg Irénée Félix René Rochard, born January 16, 1906, in Villefranche-sur-Saône and died March 29, 1984 (aged 78) in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, was a French animal sculptor. From 1924 to 1928, Irénée Rochard studied at the Écoles des Beaux-Arts and des Arts Décoratifs. From 1938, he was a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Between the wars, he was close to other animal sculptors, such as François Pompon and Édouard-Marcel Sandoz. He sculpted hundreds of animals, including horses, monkeys, gazelles, panthers, bear cubs, ducks, bison, pelicans, dromedaries, dogs, and others, in the Art Deco style. He worked in ceramics, wood, granite, and marble, but mostly bronze. He created several sculptures with Ugo Cipriani, often signed Menneville and Rochard; variations on the theme of a woman with one or more dogs, the female figures being by Menneville (Ugo Cipriani) and the dogs by himself. The city of Paris purchased some of his works (1937, 1950, 1954, 1965, 1968), as did the city of New York in 1938.
