About the Item
Very Rare French Art Deco Ceramic Bear Sculpture by Santiago Rodriguez Bonome, France, 1920s.
This exceptionally rare French Art Deco ceramic bear by Santiago Rodriguez Bonome, created in the 1920s, is a powerful and beautifully stylized example of the artist’s work. The sculpture features a superbly executed form highlighted by an extraordinary deep green glaze, a signature tone often associated with Bonome’s finest pieces.
Incised “SR BONOME PARIS” under one paw (see photo), the sculpture is fully authenticated and represents one of the most desirable subjects in Bonome’s production. Large, commanding, and full of movement, this bear embodies the bold geometry and expressive stylization that define French Art Deco animalier sculpture.
Dimensions:
• Height: 11.8 in. (30 cm)
• Width: 20.8 in. (53 cm)
• Depth: 6.7 in. (17 cm)
A true collector’s piece, rare in both size and quality, ideal for enthusiasts of Art Deco ceramics, animalier sculpture, and early 20th-century French decorative arts.
About Santiago Rodriguez Bonome (active early 20th century)
Santiago Rodriguez Bonome was a Spanish-born ceramic sculptor who established his artistic career in Paris during the height of the Art Deco period. Known simply as Bonome, he created expressive ceramic figures—particularly animals—that stand out for their sculptural strength, bold stylization, and rich, expertly applied glazes.
Active mainly in the 1920s and 1930s, Bonome produced limited quantities of work, making surviving examples comparatively scarce. His sculptures often carry the incised mark “SR BONOME PARIS,” a signature prized by collectors for its association with high-quality French Art Deco craftsmanship. Bonome’s animals—especially bears, felines, and stylized wildlife—are celebrated for their dynamic poses, clean geometric lines, and distinctive coloration.
Although less documented than major Art Deco manufacturers, Bonome’s work has gained increasing recognition for its artistic merit and rarity, and examples of his ceramics are now actively sought after on the international market.
