About the Item

Exceptional French Art Deco ceramic fish sculpture by Santiago Rodriguez Bonome, Paris, 1920s. This striking sculptural work exemplifies Bonome’s highly recognizable artistic language, characterized by bold volumes, expressive modeling, and his signature polychrome palette of green, red, and blue. The dynamic form and stylized treatment of the fish reflect the modernist spirit of the Art Deco period, while retaining a strong sculptural presence. The piece is incised “S.R. BONOME PARIS” beneath the base (see photo), confirming its authenticity. The sculpture displays beautifully from all angles and is particularly impressive when presented as a pair. Two examples are available (please refer to the 1stDibs quantity counter). A rare and highly collectible ceramic work by one of the most important figures of French Art Deco ceramic sculpture. Artist: Santiago Rodriguez Bonome Origin: Paris, France Period: 1920s Material: Glazed ceramic Style: Art Deco Measurements Height: 15.6 in (39.5 cm) Width: 14.6 in (37 cm) Depth: 6.1 in (15.5 cm) Condition Very good vintage condition Colors remain vibrant and well preserved Santiago Rodriguez Bonome was a Spanish-born sculptor and ceramicist who worked primarily in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, where he became an important contributor to the Art Deco movement. Bonome is best known for his expressive ceramic sculptures—often animals, fish, and stylized figures—distinguished by strong volumes, rhythmic forms, and a bold use of color, particularly greens, blues, and reds. His work reflects a synthesis of modernist aesthetics with a sculptural sensibility rooted in craftsmanship. His artistic importance is underscored by the presence of his works in major public and institutional collections, including: National Museum of Modern Art – Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris Museum of La Rochelle, France Valle-Inclán Foundation, Spain Museum of Lugo, Spain Caixanova Collection, Spain Museo del Prado, Madrid Today, Bonome’s ceramics are highly sought after by collectors for their rarity, distinctive color palette, and strong sculptural identity, making his Art Deco works particularly desirable on the international market.
