About the Item

This older cast and beautiful patina is just amazing. Called Cattle Drifting Before the Storm. Inspired by Remington. This is not part of the series of 500 which are new and lesser quality. Roy Harris' bronze sculptures seem ready to leap from their bases -- so detailed that ribs, tendons and vertebrae appear to strain beneath the metal skin of crouching or lunging figures. Harris' home and studio are filled with miniature horses, people, buffalo and bears -- the fruit of a lifetime of work as a university professor, cowboy and artist. "I feel like I'm an old cowboy that went wrong: I kept going to school," Harris said. "You draw from all these experiences, and if you've lived it and breathed it, it's been a spiritual part of your life and you understand things a little better." Harris, 72 and his wife of 39 years, Marie, have lived in Eagle for three years. He was born near Ogden, Utah, and lived near rodeo grounds, giving him a love of Western life. After serving briefly in Germany at the end of World War II, Harris worked as a cowboy on a ranch in Mackay. Those skills allowed him to work his way through college by training and breaking horses. "That's why I limp; I've been bucked off too many times," Harris said. Harris holds a doctorate in genetics from Utah State University and was a geneticist for 33 years. He retired from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 1986, where he taught courses in how to improve livestock through breeding. Harris now is working on a book that explains how seven different measurements of a horse can determine its potential to run fast. During his career, he has examined and measured around 5,000 horses. "All that measuring of horses has given me a better understanding of what comprises their balance and athletic ability," Harris said." I try to give the sculptures an energetic fluidity. And a horse's facial expressions are diverse as a person's." Harris got started rather late in life as an artist. In his late 1930s, when he was a professor at Cal Poly, the school hired Tom Johnston, a London-based sculptor, to join the art faculty. "We got to be close friends," Harris said. "He taught me to sculpt and he'd come by my house and tutor me." Harris' clients include actress Kirstie Alley and the prince of Spain. "I've been in some of the nicest galleries, on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, but they take a high commission," Harris said. "Plus, at our age, it's hard to travel and exhibit." Harris makes his sculptures out of clay, then sends the figures to a foundry that specializes in artwork. The foundry makes a rubber mold of the figure and makes more wax figures from this rubber mold. A plaster like shell is built around the wax figures, and when this dries, the wax is melted out. Molten bronze then is poured into the plaster mold, creating the bronze figure. An artist at the foundry puts the finishing touches on the sculptures, treating parts with chemicals and heat to create different colors, such as clothing or the mottled grey of a horse. "He knows these animals inside out because he was a geneticist. They really are lifelike," said Tere Foley, owner of Initial Point. "He truly is a cowboy artist that has lived the life.
