About the Item
Sergio Bustamante (20th century, Mexican) life sized paper mache lion from the early years of his Family Workshop Studio in Tlequepaque, Jalisco, Mexico, c. 1975
Signed in back, "Sergio Bustamante" Excellent condition (minor crack to tail, see photos).
Measures 42" x 24" x 19".
Bustamante's works initially focused on painting and paper mache and this is a wonderful example of what garnered Sergio his fame and worldwide renowned. Although life-sized and to some degree life-like, the stylization of the lion mane into ordered, geometric patterns, as well as the anthropormiphization of the lion's face, namely the spacing of the eyes and the width of the face (shortness of snout) brings to mind the early ideas that would lead to his 1980's work.
By the late 1970's, Sergio turned to the sculpting in wood and bronze, still focusing on animal subjects. The creation of ceramic sculptures in the mid-1980s provided avenues for the use of color and form in ways not previously explored and at a price point that was amenable to wider audience. In 1992, the initiation of an extensive line of exquisite jewelry in bronze, gold and silver, many set with precious and semi-precious stones and, again, often reflecting animal themes, marked a new and expansive direction for his creations. In this same year, a new series of paper mache sculptures was introduced. In the new millennium, Bustamante continues to explore new paths for the further expression of his imaginative and gifted talents.
Each piece belongs to a limited edition and is created by hand, therefore unique. Signed.
