About the Item
Sergio Bustamante (Tonala, Mexico, b. 1949) life sized brass standing unicorn sculpture, signed, Sergio Bustamante. Numbered 24/100.
The unicorn holds profound and multifaceted symbolism:
Purity and Chastity: This is perhaps the most famous association. The myth held that a unicorn could only be tamed by a virgin maiden, linking it closely with purity and innocence.
Healing Properties: The unicorn's horn, often called an "alicorn," was believed to possess potent medicinal and magical properties, capable of purifying water and neutralizing poisons. This made the unicorn a symbol of healing and protection.
Christological Symbolism: In medieval and Renaissance Christian art, the unicorn was often used as an allegory for Jesus Christ, with the virgin representing the Virgin Mary. Its capture and "death" could symbolize Christ's passion and resurrection.
Wildness and Nobility: Despite its association with purity, the unicorn was also seen as an untamable, wild creature of immense power and majesty, representing untamed freedom and nobility.
Love and Fidelity: In some contexts, particularly for rings, the unicorn could also represent fidelity or devoted love, especially when combined with other symbols like clasped hands (fede rings) or hearts.
