SIMANEK SAGIATUK (1930-) Stone Walrus, Lake Harbour / Kimmirut - Signed
Simanek Sagiatuk is an Inuit art sculpture carver from the Lake Harbour community. He used to work mostly with serpentine, a very hard stone which is originally from Nunavut, and from the same family as jade. For some of his pieces, the walruses in particular, Simanek Sagiatuk was also accustomed to add details made of caribou antler in order to make his sculptures look more realistic.
Simanek Sagiatuk learned in the traditional way, which is by watching elders and more experienced carvers sculpt.
