About the Item

Vintage or antique cast iron door stop features a tuxedo cat form with polychrome painted decor. The realistically sculpted cat is depicted sitting with its head turned to a side and its tail curled around its paws, looking over its shoulder. Carefully painted, highly detailed cat's black fur with white areas is juxtaposed by the dark green base with relief garland decor; the ornamental relief and the bottom rim are accented with gold. Figural, decorative cast iron doorstops were highly popular from the late 19th to 1930s-1940s, often depicting people, animals (such as different breeds of cats, dogs, and farm animals), patriotic figures, or everyday items. The whimsical, charming pieces, combining functional and decorative elements, are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship and historical appeal. We are offering a similar door stop with sitting tabby cat and a smaller door stop with two long hair cats in separate listings. Sculptural, decorative piece with traditional form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a great gift to a collector or a designer enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Transitional, Modern Country, English Cottage, Colonial, Federal, Eclectic, Grand Millennial, Maximalist, Collected, or Contemporary.
