About the Item

"Pastoral Abundance": Pair of Victorian Staffordshire Cow Calf Spill Vases, Circa 1860-80 A charming and impressive pair of large Victorian Staffordshire pottery spill vases, dating from circa 1860–1880. Designed as a mirrored pair, each group depicts a large cow standing protectively over a calf, which is positioned as if waiting to feed—a composition that reinforces themes of maternal nurture and domesticity. The animals are distinctively colored with bold orange-brown (iron red) patches against a white ground. Behind each group rises a stylized tree trunk, which serves the functional purpose of the spill vase (originally used to hold tapers or "spills" for lighting fires). Unusually, the interior of the vase opening is finished in a vivid orange glaze. The figures stand in a molded landscape featuring a stylized flowing stream, and the entire group is mounted on a clean, oval white base accented with a single line of gilt. Measurements: Height: 10 3/4 inches (27.3 cm) Width: 9 inches (22.9 cm) Depth: 4 inches (10.2 cm) Historical Context: In the Victorian home, the mantelpiece was the focal point of the room, and spill vases were essential functional accessories. These vessels held thin wooden splints or rolled paper "spills" used to transfer flame from the hearth to candles or lamps. The cow and calf motif was a perennial favorite in the Staffordshire potteries, symbolizing rural prosperity and the peaceful, reliable cycle of nature. The impressive scale and bright coloring of this pair were intended to make a cheerful, sentimental statement in the domestic interior. (Ref: NY10554-irrx)
