About the Item
A large, rare floorstanding papier-mache Golden Pheasant sculpture on his original red perch, by acclaimed Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante. The colours and execution are exquisite, with relief to the feathered areas and gilding on the head. Dating from the 1970s, the piece is signed and numbered 20/100. There are some age-related cracks to the lacquer on the stand base, but the bird itself is in excellent condition, as the photos show. The bird itself is an impressive 123cm high.

Sergio Bustamante
Sergio Bustamante studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara, and sold his artwork while in school, beginning in 1960. After graduating, he worked with local ceramicists, eventually opening his studio. In 1972, Bustamante moved to Amsterdam, where he learned more about painting and design. In 1975, he established his Family Workshop Studio in Tiaquepaque, Mexico. His monumental sculptures can be found in several cities, including Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and Tiaquepaque.
