SINGLE PIECE CARVING ATTRIBUTED TO WALTER MADER
From our Swiss Black Forest collection, we are delighted to offer this rare Swiss Black Forest Dog Group, dating to circa 1900.
The group is carved from linden wood as a smooth coat St Bernard female with her three puppies gathered at her feet. Each figure is carved with naturalistic detail, enhanced with a rich patination and fitted with original glass eyes. The mother dog wears a carved collar with a rope tie resting beneath her paws.
This finely executed piece is firmly attributed to renowned Black Forest carver Walter Mader, whose work is characterised by the same distinctive treatment of detail seen here. An exceptional example of late 19th to early 20th century Black Forest carving.
BLACK FOREST CARVINGS
Swiss Black Forest carvings are highly collectible hand-carved works of art, originating from Brienz, Switzerland in the 19th century. Typically crafted from linden wood or walnut, these pieces feature intricate depictions of animals, daily Alpine life, and whimsical figures. Popular subjects include bears, stags, dogs, eagles, and boars, with rarer animals and larger carvings commanding premium value. Collectors prize quality, realistic detailing, original glass eyes, and occasional carvers’ signatures, all of which significantly enhance desirability.
