This polished, molded acrylic owl sculpture made circa 1970 and cast as a single solid yet petite piece exhibits the clean lines and minimalist aesthetic of Space Age and Op Art. Formed entirely of monochromatic and semi-translucent lucite, it allows light to pass through and create optical effects. The owl's features are reduced to only the essential elements - its wide eyes and pointed beak. Devoid of feathers or other details, the sleek figure generates interplay between shadows and illumination when viewed from different angles. The signature of Aldemir Martins adorns the base.
Aldemir Martins (1922-2006) was a brazilian author kown for his paintings, drawings, sculptures and illustrations depicting the flora and fauna of his native state, Ceará. Overall, the refined glossy owl exemplifies the optimism of the era by abstracting and simplifying the animal form, and the innovative use of acrylic to achieve visual interest through purity of material and subtle plays of light.
