About the Item

Turuza Wauja Indigenous Sculpture "Monkey", 2021 This contemporary sculpture by Indigenous artist Turuza Wauja was created using traditional techniques of the Wauja people from the Upper Xingu region in Brazil. Carved from a single piece of Piranheira wood, the figure is hand-painted with natural pigments made from jenipapo fruit and crushed snail shell. Originally inspired by symbolic objects used in Wauja rituals, the monkey (singe) holds cultural and spiritual significance. The bold graphic patterns and expressive form give this piece a strong sculptural presence while preserving its ancestral roots. Dimensions: 16 x 59 x 13 cm (6 3/10 x 23 23/100 x 5 3/25 in) 15% of the sale proceeds will support a fund protecting the Xingu territory and Indigenous lifeways.
