"Two horses", Calamine, After Pierre-Jules Mene, Paris

About the Item

This sculpture, shows two horses, reflecting with remarkable perfection details of the mane and animal anatomy. The signature on the base refers to the origin of the sculpture, made in calamine. This work, done (the original) by Pierre-Jules Mene, was also titled "L'Accolade" (The Embrace). However, the original and first piece appeared in wax at the Paris Salon of 1852, entitled "TAchiani et Nedjebe, Arab Chevaux"; sculptures cast in bronze appeared in 1853, being made in three sizes. Pierre Jules Mene was a French sculptor considered, both in his time as today, as one of the pioneers and leading artists of the animalistic sculpture of the nineteenth century, with a really rich work which, as usual in this type of work after the author very frequently performed foundries. He enjoyed a longer lasting fame than its successful contemporary sculptors, and was considered the expert in casting lost wax. It is known that in 1837 he was already working for conducting its own foundries in his own foundry. He worked the small size (hence the absence of public sculpture with its name), mainly with domestic animals (horses, cows, bulls, sheep, etc.), which were fashionable in the Second Empire, giving it devoted " life "to some creations highly appreciated by the bourgeoisie, which made it necessary to melt several (or even many)" editions "of his bronze figures, usually maintaining a high level of quality. He showed their creations for the first time in London thanks to Ernest Gambart, in 1849. After his death in 1879, the Foundry Susse Frères acquired the rights to reproduce its models, performing a number of works marked "Susse fondeur éditeur, Paris". Size: 48 x 20 x 32 cms.
