About the Item
TYRA LUNDGREN, (1897-1979), sculpture, bird, partly glazed chamotted stoneware. Bottom with signature TL and B for Bredkvie, her farm on Gotland in Sweden. Mounted on limestone.
No issues whatsoever - excellent condition. Uncommonly large.
Tyra Lundgren was one of Sweden´s most multifaceted artists and a female pioneer. In her broad artistic career, she devoted herself to painting, drawing, ceramics, glass and textile design, and also worked as an art critic and writer.
As the first woman ever to design glass for Paolo Venini on Murano in Venice during the 1930s, she had previously become artistic director at Arabia in Helsinki – a professional role that at the time mostly fell to men.
Birds, fish, reptiles and people are common motifs in Tyra Lundgren's work, which varies in techniques and materials. She is primarily known as a ceramist and sculptor, but she herself considered herself a painter. She painted in watercolor and oil, often self-portraits but also still lifes and model studies. However, it was her expressive sculptures and reliefs in chamotte stoneware that made her famous, and her modeled small birds are perhaps what most people associate with her today.
