About the Item

18/19th Century Parian Marble Bust Sappho 1790/1800 Neoclassicism Villa Albani This classical marble bust depicts Sappho, a famous ancient Greek poet. She lived on the island of Lesbos between approximately 630 and 570 BC, and is considered one of the most influential voices in early European literature. Originally recited to musical accompaniment, her poetry was exceptionally sophisticated in form, featuring clear metrical structures, a delicate timbre and a high degree of emotional precision. Only a fraction of her work has survived, mainly in the form of fragments and quotations from later authors. Even these excerpts, however, convey the intimacy and immediacy for which her poetry is renowned: she writes about love, intimacy, longing, loss, memory and the sensual experience of the present. In ancient times, she was revered as "the tenth muse". Over the centuries, her name has also become associated with female homosexuality, partly through biographical interpretation and partly as a cultural projection. The terms "lesbian" and "lesbianism" are derived from her place of origin, thus making Sappho a figure who combines aesthetic, literary, and identity-historical meanings. The bust was created around 1790/1800, at a time when ancient subjects and ideals were experiencing renewed appreciation throughout Europe in the wake of Classicism. It is made of Parian marble, one of the most precious marbles of antiquity, which is famous for its exceptionally fine grain, matte transparency, and subtle refraction of light. This material enabled particularly gentle, 'skin-like' modelling of the surface and was favoured for sculptures intended to convey idealised beauty. The form shown here is based on a classical design; the original is located in the Villa Albani in Rome, an important centre of classical antiquarianism in the 18th century.
