About the Item

This 19th-century French bronze bust depicts Louise Brongniart, daughter of the distinguished Neoclassical architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart (1739–1813). It is based on the original terracotta portrait modeled in 1777 by the celebrated sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, Bust of Louise Brongniart (1772–1845), housed in the Louvre Museum. Houdon’s intimate and expressive portrayals of Louise and her brother Alexandre became immensely popular throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, leading to numerous high-quality reproductions in bronze, terracotta, and plaster.
