About the Item

Sculpted in France circa 1890, this expressive antique terracotta bust depicts a young woman dressed in period costume with delicately rendered lace, a tied bow at the neckline, and an elaborate coiffure adorned with flowers. The work reflects the refined Belle Époque sensibility, with soft romantic features, graceful contours, and naturalistic detailing that create a gentle yet striking presence. The sculpture sits on an integral plinth base and retains a warm terracotta patina that enhances the depth and shadow of the modeling. Signed “Lavergne” along the side, the piece showcases the artist’s skill in capturing character, texture, and elegance. The bust is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and presents beautifully on a pedestal, console, or library table as an antique decorative accent with strong visual impact. Adolphe Jean Lavergne (French, 1852–1901) was a Parisian sculptor active during the Belle Époque and known for his finely modeled terracotta and plaster works. He exhibited at the Paris Salon beginning in the 1870s, producing portraits, allegorical figures, and genre sculptures admired for their expressive detail and delicate realism. His pieces remain sought after by collectors for their refined execution and graceful feminine subjects. Dimensions: 8" W x 8" D x 17" H.
