About the Item

Albert-Ernest CARRIER-BELLEUSE (Anizy-le-Château, 1824 - Sèvres, 1887). Very beautiful bust of a young woman, terracotta with attractive patina. Perfect condition without base. Very beautiful object, rare, finely detailed. Around 1870. Albert-Ernest Carrier de Belleuse, who was known as Carrier-Belleuse or often simply Carrier, was born in Anizy-le-Château on June 12, 1824, and passed away in Sèvres on June 3, 1887. He was a renowned French sculptor. Throughout the 19th century, he stood out as one of the most prolific artists and garnered significant acclaim during the Second Empire, receiving personal support from Napoleon III. His artistic creations bore a strong influence from the styles of the Italian Renaissance and the 18th century, contributing to their revival and popularity. Carrier-Belleuse played a vital role in advancing the fields of decorative and industrial arts. His Paris workshop was a hub of creative activity, with numerous artists, including the renowned Auguste Rodin, collaborating and producing a plethora of decorative statuettes. In the later years of his life, Carrier-Belleuse assumed the role of director of artistic works at the esteemed Sèvres Manufacture. Under his guidance, the collections underwent renewal, and the artistic style embraced modernisation. His statues are exhibited in museums and prominent public places throughout the world.
