About the Item
A beautiful antique neoclassical style sculpture of Meleager. This was likely made in England around the 1950-60’s.
In Greek mythology, Meleager was a hero venerated in his temenos at Calydon in Aetolia. He was already famed as the host of the Calydonian boar hunt in the epic tradition that was reworked by Homer. Meleager is also mentioned as one of the Argonauts.
It is beautifully made with wonderful details, and is an impressive size. It’s hard to be certain what the material is, it could be polished red limestone or some kind of cast resin. It stands on a wooden base, the sculpture can be rotated on the base.
The condition is excellent, with only some incredibly minor wear.
