About the Item

Italian Grand Tour Bronze Bust of Menelaus on a stepped wooden plinth. Menelaus was the legendary King of Sparta from Greek mythology. This sculpture depicts the bearded warrior wearing a crested Corinthian helmet adorned with classical reliefs of mythological scenes, a hallmark of the neoclassical aesthetic. The bust is a refined Grand Tour piece, made in Italy in the late 19th century, when such bronzes where prized souvenirs collected by travelers visiting Italy. Expertly patinated with a deep, aged bronze finish, the sculpture captures both the nobility and pathos of the heroic figure.
