About the Item

Lovely biscuit porcelain bust of a young girl, named Louise Brongniart. The bust is marked on the back with 'Houdon' and the Sevres mark. Biscuit porcelain is unglazed porcelain. The bust is in good condition, only a repair on the foot (by the corner, see picture). This bust was derived from a masterpiece by Jean-Antoine Houdon. The original Bust of Louise Brongniart (1772-1845) was made of terracotta in 1777 and exhibited in the Louvre in Paris. Houdon's busts of Louise and her brother Alexandre, children of architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, became very popular in the 19th and 20th centuries and were profusely reproduced in bronze, biscuit and marble.
