About the Item
A masterful work by celebrated American sculptor Frederick Hart, “The Three Graces” reflects the visionary artistry that established Hart as one of the most important figurative sculptors of the late 20th century. Renowned for reviving classical beauty within a modern context, Hart infused his sculptures with spiritual depth, harmony, and emotional resonance. His works appear in major museum collections and include some of America’s most iconic public monuments.
Hart's inspiration for The Three Graces came from mythology.
In Greek lore, the Three Graces had the power to bestow on humankind the enchantment of beauty accompanied by refinement and gentleness.
It can be said that each of us has three graces within us.
For one person it might be faith, hope, and love.
For others, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
For Frederick Hart, the three graces were truth, beauty, and goodness.
Cast in clear acrylic resin, this sculpture demonstrates Hart’s innovative use of transparent media to create forms that appear both physical and ethereal. Three graceful female profiles emerge from a single crystalline structure, capturing elegance, unity, and fluid movement. When illuminated, the sculpture reveals shifting layers and luminous reflections—an effect Hart mastered like few others.
This example is Edition 141 of 395, artist-signed, and is in very good condition. The integrated lighting system includes a dimmer, and the pedestal features a rotating base, allowing the sculpture to be viewed from every angle with ease—perfect for enhancing its dynamic, multi-layered visual effect.
Elegant and commanding, “The Three Graces” serves as a refined and highly collectible centerpiece, embodying the craftsmanship and artistic legacy that define Frederick Hart’s enduring influence on contemporary figurative sculpture.

"I believe that art has a moral responsibility, that it must pursue something higher than itself. Art must be a part of life. It must exist in the domain of the common man. It must be an enriching, ennobling and vital partner in the public pursuit of civilization. It should be a majestic presence in everyday life just as it was in the past.
These are the words of Frederick Hart who has been described as America's greatest representational artist. "My work isn't art for art's sake, it's about life. I have no patience with obscure or unintelligible art - I want to be understood."
Born (1943) in Atlanta, GA, Hart began his art career working at the Washington National Cathedral in 1967 as an aspiring artist working with Italian stone carvers. "The Cathedral became a magical place for me, a place outside of this century. The wonderful Italian stone carvers who worked there were the last of a generation, a link back to the major American architectural works of the early 1900's, to buildings like the Supreme Court, the Federal Triangle, and Grand Central Station, as well as to the great American sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French."
In 1971 he began sculpting in his own unheated studio, "almost starving to death" as he sketched his ideas for the Cathedral international competition to commission the design for a series of "creation" sculptures for its main facade, Hart remembers, "It was to be a contemporary idea of Creation, a vision of an unfolding universe." Inspired by Pierre Tellhard de Chardin's writings on science and theology, Hart envisioned a great allegorical work which would evoke the heroic struggle for awakening and consciousness. The selection committee for the Cathedral was impressed with the power and vision of his scale model studies and in 1974 awarded him the project. He was thirty-one.
In the year 1985 President Regan honored Hart with a prestigious and influential role by appointing him to a five-year term on the Commission of Fine Art. The Creation Sculptures were completed in 1990, almost twenty years after Hart began designing them and he went on to create the statue of "Three Soldiers" for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the nation's capitol. In 1993 he was distinguished with an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of South Carolina.
Frederick Hart's legacy is diverse and wide spread, throughout his career he worked in stone, bronze, marble and pioneered the use of acrylics in figurative sculpture, a technique he called "sculpting with light". He was an inventive revolutionary; his works are physical and sensuous, yet spiritual; direct, graceful and subtle. He is survived by Lindy Hart and they are the parents of two sons, Lain and Alexander . . . And he is survived by his art which lives on, spreading ethereal, vibrant beauty throughout the world.

Frederick Hart
A sculptor and stone cutter in the Classical* style, Frederick Hart was an apprentice at the National Cathedral in Washington DC and there learned about sculpting and stone cutting. Then his big break of public recognition came when he won a competition to design the facade of the Cathedral, which incorporated his thirteen year masterpiece of the Creation, a 21 X 15 foot bas relief*. He also designed Three Soldiers, realistic in style, for the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in DC to contrast with the abstraction of Maya Lin's Vietnam Memorial. Born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in South Carolina, Frederick Hart was an opponent of most contemporary art, thinking it motivated by political rather than aesthetic reasons. As a proponent of Realism*, he was made an honorary member of The American Society of Classical Realism Guild of Artists. Just before his premature death from lung cancer in 1999, he built his 17,000 square-foot dream home "Chesley," on 250 acres of land in Virginia. This mansion was intended to be an artists' retreat to nourish traditional, classical values and refute modernist* trends that he said allowed anything to be called art. He endured several legal battles including the use of his Three Soldiers on a souvenir without his permission and a lawsuit with Time-Warner over the "demonizing" of his creation scene.

"Light Whispers", Frederick Hart, Acrylic Sculpture, 17x12x5 in., 182/350, white
By Frederick Hart
Located in Dallas, TX
"Light Whispers" Dimensions: 17" x 12" x 5" Medium: Clear Acrylic Resin Edition 182/300
Frederick Hart's "Light Whispers" is the perfect name for this lucite sculpture that studies translucency's impact on the interplay of shadow and light. The nude woman subject is repeated several times, with varying degrees of revelation. In some iterations, she is shrouded in mystery, while other representations show her on full display with remarkable detail.
Thanks to his impeccable eye for detail and technical precision, Frederick Hart is considered one of the world's foremost figurative sculptors. His classical techniques make for timeless, traditional works, but the innovative and modern use of lucite as a material help modernize the work.
Frederick Hart's "Light Whispers" is signed by the artist and includes a gallery certificate of authenticity. It is from an edition of 300 and the current gallery retail price for the piece is over $16,000.
About Frederick Hart
As one of America’s greatest representational artists, Frederick Hart left a lasting and unique mark in the world of modern sculpture. Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1943, he studied at the University of South Carolina and after protesting alongside black students during the Civil rights movement, he moved to Washington D.C. to continue his studies at the Corcoran School of Art. Fascinated with the human figure and the classical approach, he started developing his career in 1966 as a stone carver apprentice at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Leaving the Cathedral in 1971, Hart started his own studio practice but had little success in the first years. In 1974, he was awarded the project by the Cathedral to create a contemporary interpretation of The Creation, an event that would change his life. Soon, Hart’s career took a turn for the better, and in the upcoming decades, he rose to national prominence, becoming a government art advisor in 1985 and receiving the prestigious Henry Hering...
