About the Item

A charming and high quality French 19th century patinated Bronze, Ormolu and Vert Antique Grec marble bust of Le Baiser Donné, modeled after Jean Antoine Houdon. This most elegant bust is raised by a circular stepped Vert Antique Grec marble base with a mottled design and a bottom Ormolu band. Above the Ormolu socle pedestal is the most charming and richly chased bust of a handsome man kissing a beautiful woman while holding her in his arms. 'Le Baiser Donné et Le Baiser Rendu' illustrates a scene from the French literary classic, the Fables of Jean de la Fontaine. It is one of a pair of courtship subjects; the other is titled Le Baiser Donné (The Kiss Bestowed), in the collection of Baron Maurice de Rothschild, Paris.
