About the Item

An elegant and most decorative French 19th century Terra Cotta bust of Madame de Pompadour. This charming bust is raised on a square tapered socle support with mottled designs and a rounded band. Above is Madame de Pompadour, born Jeanne Antoinette Poosson, who was a member of the French Court. She was the official chief mistress of King Louis XV from 1745-1751, and remained influential as a court favorite until her death. She is depicted in classical attire, with a sash draped over her shoulder. Her hair is pinned with flowers and is loosely collected in a curled bun. The bust is finished on all sides, and signed on the back 'Portrait of Madame de Pompadour'. All original Terra Cotta patination throughout.
