French bronze sculpture bust of a man by Aimé-Jules Dalou
French, 1888
Height 49cm, width 20cm, depth 21cm
This fine patinated bronze bust by the French sculptor Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902)portrays a young, idealistically beautiful man. The sitter gazes to the heavens with his mouth slightly agape. The bronze is superbly rendered and textured and is set atop a red marble plinth. The piece is signed to the reverse ‘DALOU 1888’.
Dalou spent his training and early career in Paris, exhibiting at the Paris Salon for the first time in 1861 (where he became friends with the great sculptor Auguste Rodin). Whilst he later went on to create several notable French sculptures including 'The Triumph of the Republic' (Place de la Nation, Paris), following the Franco-Prussian War he spent several years in England. During this time he was commissioned by Queen Victoria to create a memorial sculpture for her late grandchildren. Housed in the private Royal Chapel of Windsor Castle, the sculpture depicts an angel cradling many children. Dalou completed several studies of the angel bust in preparation for this commission, which he later sold as individual works - this cast is from one such study. The original sculpture is now housed in the Royal Collection Trust.
The model for the angel is the son of Angelino Cartioni, Dalou's London assistant. The fact that sculpture has no foundry marks indicates that it is a rare English cast rather than a typical French one. Another study of the angel figurehead is held in the Chrysler Museum of Art.
Boasting a fascinating English royal history, this impressive bust is highly desirable.

Aimé-Jules Dalou
Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902) was one of only a handful of leading late-nineteenth century French Sculptors, whose reputation was perhaps second only to his contemporaries, Henri Chapu (1833-1891) and Marius Jean Antonin Mercié (1845-1916). Dalou was hugely influential and was a founding member of the Société des Artistes Français and later a founder of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He was officially rewarded with the highest rank of the Légion d'Honneur two years before his death, with the inauguration of the Triumph of the Republic, in 1899. He started his artistic training in 1852 at the Petite Ecole after being encouraged to do so by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, where he studied drawing and modelling. Carpeaux continued to support Dalou throughout his career and influenced his sculpture greatly. Dalou began employment in the field of decorative sculpture working for two companies in Paris, Lefèvre and Favière goldsmiths. During this time he contributed towards the architectural features of Hôtel de la Païva, the then home of the infamous French courtesan Esther Lachmann known as La Païva. Dalou's unique approach lay in his broad range of subject, painterly and sculptural source material, though which he absorbed an impressive spectrum of inspiration. The work of an eighteenth-century sculptor, Louis-François Roubiliac, played a significant role in Dalou's artistic development, whose sculptures he studied whilst in London. Dalou's work includes friezes, maquettes, reliefs, and individual bronze figures. He is known for Baroque-inspired allegorical group compositions, as much as for his depictions of the French rural labouring classes. Dalou encouraged students of art to free themselves from the constraints of established traditions, with his style and teachings thought to have awakened a new generation of young British sculptors whose work was later aligned to the New Sculpture movement.

Bronze Bust Sculpture on Marble Plinth
Located in London, GB
This strikingly naturalistic bronze sculpture was created in Florence in 1895. The bust depicts an elderly man, most likely a farm worker, carrying a heavy sack of grain over his shoulder. He wears an old slightly ragged shirt which is open at his chest, revealing his thin body underneath. The man looks out into the distance on the left, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. His mouth is open as though he is breathing heavily with the strain of the work or calling out to someone unknown to the viewer.
The sculptor has accurately rendered every detail, with great truth to reality. The faint stubble on the man's chin and the wrinkles on his face and hands are faithfully portrayed. In its naturalistic style and its everyday, unidealised subject-matter, this bronze may be described as a work of Realism. The Realist movement flourished in the arts in Europe in this period, the 19th Century.
The bust is signed ‘G Rossi...

An Ormolu bust of a 16th century Prince, by Rancoulet
French, Late 19th Century
Height 72cm, width 42cm, depth 22cm
Made by the skilled and renowned French artist and sculptor Ernest Rancoulet, (French, 1870-1915), this excellent gilt-bronze bust was made in the late nineteenth century, in fine neoclassical style. Rancoulet was best known for mythological scenes and figures, and depictions of athletes. He was also known for depictions of members of high society, often aristocratic women, exhibiting for a number of years at the Paris Salon, producing many exceptional likenesses, busts, and figurines, such as this.
In this work, the sitter, envisioned as a 16th century Prince or nobleman of sorts, towards out and towards the left. He wears a plumed hat and a high collared cape, with a typical period frilled ruff. His tunic is elaborately decorated with jewellery. A portrait full of character and vitality, this work is an excellent representation of Rancoulet's work, and of French Neoclassical sculpture...
