About the Item
This elegant bust of a young woman was created by the acclaimed sculptor, Affortunato Gory (Italian, fl. 1895-1925). Affortunato Gory (also known as Fortunato Gory) studied under the sculptor, Augustor Rivalta, at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. At the turn of the century, he moved to Paris, and he began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1902. Gory is best-known for his mixed-media sculptures of beautiful young women. By combining different materials, such as ivory, gilt bronze (ormolu), marble and alabaster, Gory gave his work a sumptuous, luxurious quality. This bust is signed ‘A Gory/ Paris’.
The sculpture takes the form of a white marble head of a woman, who looks off to the right into the distance. The woman is dressed in a gilt bronze (ormolu) ruffled bonnet and bodice, with an embroidered neckline and frilled sleeves. The bust is set on a black-green marble socle, with a square base. This is placed on a tall black-green marble plinth, which is decorated with foliate ormolu bands and an ormolu vase motif on its front.

Affortunato Gory
Affortunato Gory (Gori) was a French-Italian artist who specialized in Art Deco figurative sculpture, often combining materials such as bronze, ivory, and marble to dazzling effect. Born in 1895 in Florence, Italy, Gory emigrated to France after studying with noted sculptor Augusto Rivalta at the Accademia di Belle Arti in his home city. He continued to practice and learn from the French artist Victorien-Antoine Bastet after his move to Paris, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français on multiple occasions. Little else is known about the artist, who died in 1925.

An Ormolu bust of a 16th century Prince, by Rancoulet
French, Late 19th Century
Height 72cm, width 42cm, depth 22cm
Made by the skilled and renowned French artist and sculptor Ernest Rancoulet, (French, 1870-1915), this excellent gilt-bronze bust was made in the late nineteenth century, in fine neoclassical style. Rancoulet was best known for mythological scenes and figures, and depictions of athletes. He was also known for depictions of members of high society, often aristocratic women, exhibiting for a number of years at the Paris Salon, producing many exceptional likenesses, busts, and figurines, such as this.
In this work, the sitter, envisioned as a 16th century Prince or nobleman of sorts, towards out and towards the left. He wears a plumed hat and a high collared cape, with a typical period frilled ruff. His tunic is elaborately decorated with jewellery. A portrait full of character and vitality, this work is an excellent representation of Rancoulet's work, and of French Neoclassical sculpture...
