About the Item

A striking bronze relief featuring a bearded man, reminiscent of Antiquity's 'death masks', signed Juan Carlos Iramain (1900-1973). Set onto an ebonized square base. Also inscribed with a foundry mark, 'Fon. cambarolo'. Circa 1940. Juan Carlos Iramain (1900–1973) was a renowned Argentine sculptor from Tucumán, celebrated for his monumental religious works. He exhibited for the first time at age nine and later continued his artistic training in Buenos Aires, where he became acquainted with leading cultural figures of the era. In the 1940s he created the 28-meter Cristo Bendicente, and after a productive period in the United States—where he sculpted a portrait of Albert Einstein—he returned to Argentina to complete the Cristo Penitente in Salta. A prominent figure whose works were often commissioned by the national government, Iramain died in 1973 and was buried beneath the Cristo Bendicente. That same year, the Iramain Museum was founded in San Miguel de Tucumán to preserve his legacy.
