About the Item
Large Italian Plaster Bust by S. Melani, 1940s–1950s – Art Deco / Mid-Century Sculpture
This striking plaster bust was created in Italy during the 1940s–1950s by the renowned sculptor Salvatore Melani (1902–1934), best known for his Art Deco and early mid-century figurative works. The piece is clearly signed S. Melani and numbered 724 at the base.
The sculpture depicts a young woman with wind-swept hair and a radiant smile, her features animated with vitality and optimism. Hand-painted with subtle naturalistic tones and soft highlights, the bust captures both movement and expression in a highly decorative way.
While many of Melani’s works are known in terracotta and bronze, this large plaster bust stands out as a rare example of his mid-century shop display figures and sculptural decorations. With its dynamic form and cinematic presence, it bridges Art Deco stylisation with Hollywood Regency glamour, making it both a collectible artwork and a decorative statement piece.
