About the Item

Large late 18th Century French hand carved ships figurehead. A rare survivor, this figurehead would most likely have come from a Southern French merchant ship. It has traces of the original gesso finish but most has weathered away. Originally these would have been brightly painted. It is mounted on a 19th Century Napoleon III plinth base with ebonised finish. Circa 1780.
