This large painted bust was cast from the original bronze sculpture by Adelbert Ames, Jr. in 1912. Ames (1880-1955) spent several years after graduating from Harvard Law School as a painter and sculptor in collaboration with his sister Blanche. It is signed "A. Ames, Jr. 1912" within the casting by the artist on the lower back. It is hand-painted, and also obscurely signed by the painter. Ames soon abandoned his art career and became a scientist specializing in Physiological Optics, eventually being appointed the Director of Research at the Dartmouth Eye Institute in Hanover, New Hampshire. Ames was commissioned by the National Shawmut Bank of Boston (1836-1995) to sculpt this figure of Obbatinewat, the bank's logo, plaster copies of which were to be used as displays in all of its branches. The logo was retired in 1995 when the Shawmut Bank merged with another bank. The logo was revived in 1998 by a venture capital firm which now uses the name Shawmut and the logo of Obbatinewat. Obbatinewat, circa 1610-1630, was Sachem of the Wampanoag settlement of Shawmut on what is now the Shawmut Peninsula, the land upon which the city of Boston was built. Obbatinewat signed a treaty of peace with Captain John Smith for mutual defense and also befriended the settlers of Plymouth Colony. The National Shawmut Bank honored him for his role in early Boston history and for his strength and goodwill, by using these qualities as guidelines for their own business. The bust itself is in great condition with no losses or chips. The paint is starting to peel on the lower back and on some other minor areas, but it is typical of painted chalk-ware of this age.
