About the Item

In the portrait is where Rome gives his most characteristic contribution of the tradition founded by the Greeks, a contribution that has matured much earlier than in other types of sculptures and that made the development of sculpture in Rome, divided into two fields, with different patterns of evolution, portraiture and other types. From the time of the Republic the portrait was very well valued and with time oscillated cyclically between an idealizing classicist tendency and one of great realism, derived in part from the expressiveness typical of Hellenistic art. And among the portraits, the bust and head were the most frequent forms. Whole body pictures were less common, though not rare. The preference for the bust and head is a typical Roman cultural feature that created a huge market throughout the Mediterranean basin, and is explained first, for economic reasons, being much cheaper than a complete statue, but also for the conviction of a Better individual identification that prevailed among them. For the Romans it was the head and not the body nor the costumes or accessories, the attributes of the center of interest in the portrait." Size: 56 x 20 x 73 cms. Weight is orientative.
