About the Item

Decorate a shell or wine cellar with this elegant bust. Hand crafted in France circa 1970, and built of iron, the bust sits on an attached round base, and depicts a young female "Bacchante", priestess and follower of Bacchus, god of wine and wine-making. The young girl, her head turned, is decorated with grape clusters in her hair. The sweet bust is in excellent condition with wonderful details, and adorns a rich polished black and silver steel finish. Weight 23 pounds. Bacchus was the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility, equivalent to the Greek god Dionysus. The cult of Bacchus seems to have held a particular attraction for women. A Bacchante is a woman votary of Bacchus; Maenads refers to the women devotees to Dionysus (Greek for Roman Bacchus). Measure: 17"H.

A large bronze bust showing a beautiful young woman depicted as a Bacchante, the Greek Goddess of Wine, her head festooned with grape branches. The bust is supported by an integral bronze plinth that at the back is inscribed with the name of the sculptor, J. Clesinger Rome 1857 dating the bronze to the time when the sculptor was 33 years old. The sculptor whose full name was Jean Auguste Baptiste Clesinger was born in 1813 in Besancon in Southern France. His father, Georges-Philippe, was a sculptor and trained Auguste in art. Auguste first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1843 with a bust of Vicomte Jules de Vaidahon. At the 1847 Salon, he created a sensation with his Woman bitten by a serpent, produced from life-casts from his model Apollonie Sabartier who was a notorious Parisian and the mistress of many perhaps even of Clesinger himself.
