About the Item

A superb, finely cast and well-patinated pair of French bronze busts representing Jean Racine and Pierre Corneille, two of the most celebrated dramatists of the 17th century. Each bust is modelled with impressive realism and depth, showing deeply carved hair, expressive features, and classical drapery characteristic of late-19th-century academic foundry work. The bronzes are mounted on elegant bleu turquin marble cylindrical plinths, each fitted with an ormolu nameplate engraved RACINE and CORNEILLE. The plinths are enriched with finely cast gilt bronze beaded rims, chain swags, and stepped bases, all in original gilt finish with a warm, untouched tone. The patinated bronze surfaces retain their original, rich brown sheen, and the crisp modelling shows the high quality associated with the better French foundries of the late 19th century.
