Art reproduction in terracotta of Juliette Recamier after Joseph Chinard H 63 x L 30 x P 24 cm. Married to a rich banker at the age of 16, a woman of wit, Juliette Récamier received at her home in the early nineteenth century men of letters, artists and scholars. Its lounge is one of the most prominent of the capital. But even more than for her spirit, it is celebrated in the Tout-Paris for its beauty. She is nicknamed "the beautiful of the beautiful" and many artists fascinated by her perfect features realize her portrait. This terracotta bust sculpted by Joseph Chinard (1801-1802, LA, Getty Center) is one of the most admired. Chinard executed it before his model during one of his stays in Paris in 1801 or 1802, while he was staying with the Récamiers. Juliette Recamier is represented when she is not yet 30 years old. The success of this portrait lies in its clever balance between simplicity and elegance, shyness and effrontery. The modest pose contrasts with the elegance of the sophisticated hairstyle. The head delicately inclined and the look timidly directed down, Juliette Recamier modestly raises his shawl but the transparency of the latter reveals his chest more than he hides it. The pose and the headdress of the model highlight the sensuality of its neck and its bare back and allow Chinard to exalt thus the legendary beauty of the beautiful Juliet. Chinard will carve a version of this bust in a block of marble in 1805 (Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon), the same year that Baron Gérard realized the no less famous painted portrait of the same model, today at the Carnavalet Museum.
