Art reproduction in Terracotta, Louise Brongniart after Jean-Antoine Houdon H 43 cm. Jean-Jacques Houdon (1741-1828) was the son of the caretaker of the Petite Ecole, he was able to evolve along the artists of the Academy despite his social origin. He followed the path of sculpture and won the Prix de Rome. He received only few royal commissions and instead used his talent to capture the face of these contemporary: We remember him as the portraitist of the Enlightenment. Taking the codes of ancient bust Houdon claims a representation "au naturel" of his subjects and tries to make the portrait the most vivid possible. Among the portraits carved by Houdon i a number of children. Houdon showed in his first exhibition at the Salon in 1769 his interest in this art by sending a child portrait. The portraits of children, rarely encountered before, became much more frequent from 1750-1760. Several phenomenon explain this change : the general enthusiasm for portraiture extending to other classes of society, the change in attitudes towards children and the development of idealized portraits called are the heads of study. Houdon's best known busts of children are probably those of the Brongniart children (Brongniart, the architect of the Paris Stock Exchange), copied in all ages, they are presented in many museums (the Louvre, met, frick ...) . Introduced in 1777, these two portraits reflect the childhood without being naive. The two function are counterparts: he dressed and he naked; him bright and her calm. The most impressive work in these busts are in the eyes.: Houdon worked the clay in two ways to mark the colors and light of the eyes. If fashion baby portraits is due to Drouais, Houdon has revolutionized the aesthetic of it.
