About the Item
This is a White Marble Bust of an Italian Young Woman by John Hutchison. It depicts a 19th century Italian peasant with her distinguishing costume. She has an expressive and large pair of eyes and a Roman nose. Her wavy hair is braided at each side and adorned with a head kerchief or fazzoletto with a tassel. She is embellished by a pair of drop earrings and a two strands necklace most likely made of Coral that was typical of that time. She is wearing a pleated shirt with embroidered flowers border. The bust is supported by a very small white marble column pedestal. It is also hallmarked J.Hutchison Rome, 1863 at the back. J.Hutchison (1832- 1910) was a Scottish sculptor who studied in Rome and later on returned to Edinburgh. He was an outstanding artist who received commissions from Queen Victoria. He did the Sir Walter Scott bust that is in the Westminster Abbey.
