Upper Austria, c. 1500 This monastic saint, his expression serious and contemplative, wears an ample cowl and holds a book. He is perhaps Benedict of Nursia, founder of western monasticism. Although the absence of attributes does not allow us to identify him with certainty, we can well imaging that he held an abbot?€™s cross in his right hand. The book in his left hand may be the Rule of Saint Benedict, which he wrote and which endured for a millennium as the principal guide to the monastic life. The standing figure presents an accentuated contraposto. The sinusoidal curve of the body extends from the monks feet to his lowered head. His right knee conveys marked plasticity. The ample drapery falls in pleats characterized by large folds and further emphasized by the large sleeves. The crumpled pleats are treated in a decorative manner. This accumulation of pleats with deep crevices evokes violent contrasts of light and shadow on the figure. The hands are fine with unusually long fingers that are slightly curved. The expressive face shows lowered eyes topped by frowning eyebrows, which convey the impression of affliction. Numerous details should be noted: the partially open mouth, the wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, and the fine strands of curling hair. The modeling of the face is very subtle and helps emphasize the loose skin of the lower part of the face and around the eyes. The very expressive character of the face as well as the powerful modeling suggests comparison of this work with that of the Master of Kefermarkt, named after his eponymous altarpiece. In particular, note the similar treatments of the rumpled drapery, the posture, the forceful expression, as well as the same refined treatment of the hands. The great aesthetic quality and the technique allow us to attribute this to an atelier of importance. Named for the high altarpiece of the pilgrimage church of Kefermarkt, for which Christoph von Zelking, one of Emperor Frederick III's retainers, provided an annual payment in his will of 1490 for a work that was terminated in 1497, this artist was active as a sculptor and a painter primarily in Upper Austria. Compare especially the sculpted figures of Saint Stephen and Saint Laurence from Kefermarkt, dated 1490, and the figure of a Deacon now in the Musée du Louvre.

Good state of conservation, with some traces of polychrome on the reverse. The statue was decapitated at an unknown date, and the right hand is missing. The back is not carved. The base is modern.
