Victor Jules Bergeron, Jr. was the founder of a chain of Polynesian-themed restaurants that bore his nickname, Trader Vic. A native of the Bay Area, Bergeron attended Heald College in San Francisco and in 1934 he opened a small bar/restaurant in Oakland named Hinky Dink’s. As its popularity spread, the menu and décor developed an increasingly tropical flair and Hinky Dink’s soon became Trader Vic’s. In 1944 Trader Vic, now a celebrity chef, was credited with creating the Mai Tai. The overall success of the business led to a number of restaurants by the same name and Trader Vic’s is often considered as one of the first successful themed chains.
