About the Item

12th century extremely rare romanesque wood sculpture of the Virgin Mary. Magnificent wood hand carved sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding a book to her chest. It is an extremely rare survivor of the 12th century. The style is European, possibly French or English. This statue is a testimony to beautiful religious art from about 1150. A truly rare Romanesque sculpture of museum quality. The Romanesque world extended from approximately the10th century - 1200 A.D. The aesthetic of the piece is characteristic of Romanesque culture and heavily stylized in its simplicity. A good, age appropriate antique condition. It retains the majority of the original polychrome decoration. The statue is mounted on a modern plinth. Provenance: From a private collection. Dimensions: Figure - 11” H x 4.25” W x 3.50” D w/ plinth - 16” height Weight w/ base - 5lbs.

This rare 17th century panel, carved in high relief, is museum quality and without doubt the work of an important Flemish master carver. It represents the biblical scene of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem for the census. Multiple figures surround the center in a well balanced setting. Rich, deep color and great patina, which developed over about 400 years, make this piece of art exceptional. The panel is mounted on a later dusty rose velvet backing. Condition: Small part of backdrop on right is missing. Joseph’s left hand is missing.
