About the Item

A majestic sculpture in the round depicting Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus, made of carved, polychrome, and water-gilded wood using the gilding technique. The piece, probably originating in Spain or Colonial America, dates from the 17th century and masterfully embodies the ideals of Baroque religious art: expressiveness, dynamism, and spiritual exaltation. Saint Joseph is depicted standing, in a serene and loving attitude, tenderly holding the Child in his arms. The meticulous treatment of the gilding on the robes is striking, with plant motifs and arabesques finely delineated in gold leaf on a red background, a characteristic technique of the Spanish Baroque. The semi-nude Child Jesus rests naturally in the saint's arms, in an affectionate gesture that reinforces the emotional connection of the scene. The figure stands on a carved rock base, which lends solidity and monumentality to the composition, while emphasizing its devotional meaning. The quality of the carving of hands, faces and folds demonstrates the work of a highly technical sculpture workshop.
