About the Item

17th-Century Carved Wooden Angel – Polychrome and Gilded Sculpture (One Wing Remaining) Height: 70 cm Width: 33 cm A beautiful 17th-century carved wooden angel, depicted kneeling in prayer with delicately clasped hands and a serene, contemplative expression. The figure retains traces of its original polychrome and gilding, now softly worn with time to reveal a rich and authentic patina. This early Baroque angel displays elegant craftsmanship in the flowing drapery and fine facial features. It retains one original wing, the other now lost — a detail that only adds to its historical charm and sense of age. Originally part of a church or chapel setting, this devotional sculpture carries a strong spiritual presence and a deep sense of serenity. Mounted on a later wooden base for stability and display. Condition: Fair original antique condition (no restorations) with several age-related cracks, wear, surface losses and cracking gesso. Inactive worm holes seen from the back. The angel has lost one wing and a foot, likely removed to facilitate mounting in a church or chapel. The remaining gilding and paint have developed an attractive timeworn patina. Dimensions: Height: 70 cm Width: 33 cm A soulful and expressive 17th-century angel — an evocative survivor of early religious art.
