About the Item
17th century Italian hand-carved and gilded crown adorned with herkimer diamonds and mounted on an antique gold base.
This was original from a historical Italian church and would have been a part of a depiction of Mary. The crown is made of hand-carved wood with a centered pediment detail of a cross surrounded by carved gold foliage. Coordinating natural herkimer diamonds ornament the crown with similar gold hues. Herkimer "diamonds" are found as doubly-terminated crystals, characterized by outstanding clarity and luster.
The fragment has been preserved and transformed by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she transformed the piece and the period shows that the fragment artifact is originally 17th century.
The piece has been preserved and transformed with the herkimer diamonds to create a figurative, organic, and historical sculptural piece.
